Conifers

Chequer-barked juniper, alligator juniper. Particularly conspicuous as a young plant when it is the most vividly silver-blue of all junipers. Not easy to cultivate coming as it does from dry mountain slopes of the SW USA and NE Mexico.

 (Blue Rug Juniper)One of the best forms, its branches long and prostrate, forming flattened, glaucous blue carpets.One of the most well-known ground cover cultivars,forming a very dense,slow-growing carpet with bluish green needles.In ten years 0.1-0.2x2-3m.Found on the islan of Vinalhaven,ME,USA, by Jacob C.van Heiningen of South Wilton,CT,USA in 1914.

Shrub.Full sun to light shade.Frost hardy.Evergreen.0.3m tall, 1m wide.The needles turn a bronze/purple in winter (cold climates only), otherwise its an all year round dense groundcover that provides foliage interest, texture and shape.This is a very hardy plant that can handle frosts, pollution and neglect.

 juniperus scopulorum blue heaven A small, conical tree with striking blue foliage.

A prostrate shrub resembling J.rigida subsp.conferta but with flatter needles and dense foliage this is neither prickly nor pungent when crushed.It is an attractive grass-green ground cover and is one of the feew conifers that will fall vertically down over rocks.Only a few cm high,it will be 70-100cm across in ten years.J.taxifolia was named in 1838.A population of prostrate coastal plants in the wild were named J.lutchuensis by Koidzumi in 1918, J.conferta var.rigida by E.H. Wilson ex Nakai in 1922, J.taxifolia var.lutchuensis by Sarake in 1962 and considered as J.taxifolia var.maritima by lewis in 1992.

 A narrow, erect, fast growing conifer with lustrous, silvery-blue to green foliage.Very hardy and easy to grow.Will fit in narrow areas like side yards between homes.

Huon pine.In the milder parts of the British Isles this forms a large, graceful shrub or small, conical tree. The slender, drooping branches are clothed with bright green, scale-like leaves. Subject to injury in severe winters. The wood is highly prized for furniture and cabinet work in Tasmania.
