Description
Ilex aquifolium (English Holly)
Ilex aquifolium, commonly known as English Holly, is an evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its glossy, dark green, spiny leaves and vibrant red berries. It thrives in cool, temperate climates and prefers well-drained soil with partial to full sun. While it adds year-round structure and winter interest, it can become invasive in some regions of Australia, particularly in cooler areas like Tasmania and the highlands.
If planting holly, choose non-invasive or sterile cultivars and keep it pruned to prevent uncontrolled spread. The berries attract birds but are toxic to humans and pets. Suitable for hedging, privacy screens, or as a striking standalone feature.
Tip: Avoid planting in bushland areas to protect native ecosystems.
